In a special interview conducted by Abouna.org, affiliated with the Catholic Center for Studies and Media in Jordan, and broadcast on its platforms on the evening of Tuesday, 22 September 2020, MECC Secretary General–elect Dr. Michel Abs stressed the need for the Council to be a melting pot of interaction between the churches. He noted that ecumenism is a "state" that comes from upbringing, and can also be a "challenge" for those who have not lived the experience of opening up to "the self and the other." He said the time of silence has ended: the peoples of the East have suffered for centuries because of historical injustice, and it is therefore unacceptable for this suffering and persecution to continue for religious, racial or ethnic reasons, closing with: "You are in the likeness of the crucified — and you must rise on the third day."
